Using multimedia sketches of real world OR applications to enhance student learning experience

Abstract

The traditional approach of teaching Operations Research (OR) focuses on mathematical models. However, students often fail to appreciate the benefits of the advanced analytical methods without real world engagement. This project aims to promote a discovery-oriented and cross-disciplinary learning through developing thumbnail sketches of real world situations that are related to OR. It will help students become aware of both the opportunities of applying OR methods and the magnitude of potential benefits from analytical models. The development of multimedia sketches will also help students to better understand textbook concepts and improve their visual, verbal, and multi-media communication skills.
