CityU SportCompass

Abstract

CityU SportCompass is an Android application which aims at providing smartphone users with a better experience to reserve Sport facilities in Hu Fa Kuang and Joint-University sport center more effectively. It is integrated with social network so as to allow user to discover "sport-mates" from their friends, or even people they have never met. Through this approach, it tries to encourage more people to do exercise and increase the utilization of the sport centers. This application is developed using cross-platform tool, PhoneGap, which is based on two web application languages, HTML5 and JavaScript. On the other hand, as there is no API available to call the server of CityU sport center, cloning HTTP requests is the only feasible method to maintain the communication. Using PhoneGap to develop mobile application enables same source code to be deployed in different mobile platform, but the UI design becomes one of the challenges. Also, the functionality has been limited to the situation that no API support is available. The current version of SportCompass provides all the functions in CityU's Sport Facility Booking and Information System, additionally, it provides a social platform for users to create sport events and look for sport mates.
