Abstract: | The main objective of my Final year project is to build Three Dimensional landmarks for the Hong Kong Island including buildings, scenic places and structures using VRML (Virtual Reality Modelling Language) with some others supplementary programming language like Java/JavaScript. The FYP in this year is quite different from the past few years [Ocean Park (HK), Hong Kong International Airport, and Dreamworld (GoldCoast, Australia)] simply because it covers a wide range of area, so it is needed to have different strategies towards the FYP in order to obtain a well-optimized 3D environment. Basically, we divided the whole Hong Kong Island into 3 main parts according to the physical location. My part is mainly the western part of the Hong Kong Island including Sheung Wan, Central District, Admiralty, Wan Chai, and Peak District. I basically divide the FYP into 2 main aspects; they are the VRML 3D models programming part and the optimization part (Focusing on file size reduction and faster rendering speed). For my modelling part, I have finished most of the famous buildings models, Island landscape modelling, and background low polygons buildings. And I finished the modelling on some famous scenic places with higher detail which allow user to closely walk in the 3D environment. From engineering point of view, I had applied the polygons Reduction/Reuse technique, VRML file compression technique in order to fully optimism the 3D environment. And I had successfully greatly reduced the file size for the VRML file which greatly improves the overall performance of the 3D world. In short, this FYP provides a great opportunity for me to learn advance technologies in 3D web design and VRML programming. |
