The first part of this project is to study the idea of forming a broadband optical coupler by use of two parallel coupled long-period fiber grating (LPFG). The characteristics of the LPFG coupler such as the effects of changing the surrounding refractive index and introducing an offset distance between the gratings and the coupling efficiency of the coupler are also investigated. The second part is to investigate various suitable methods for packaging the LPFG coupler. The packaging method was using a refractive index of 1.420 UV light curing Adhesive OP-4-20725 from DYMAX Corporation to embedded the LPFG coupler and then it is mounted on the a thick (>10mm) and straight metal plane to avoid the LPFG from bending. The change in the efficiency of the LPFG coupler was negligible after packagingen_US
